Identifying a list of colleges/prep schools to further one's education after high school is only part of the process. As part of the application, a standardized test is "usually" required, as is the dreaded college essay/personal statement. And then there is the squeamish part: How to pay for it? At Eagle, our staff can help you handle all those aspects. Read below and they will tell you how.
The advent of the Internet, and the online application, has allowed more students to apply to more colleges than ever before. Add the Common Application, and with the click of a mouse, students can now apply to dozens of colleges instantaneously.
There are now more admissions programs than ever before: regular, rolling, Early Decision, Early Action, and Single Choice Early Action. In short, it can be quite overwhelming for a teenager to decide where and when to apply to college. Eagle Educational consultants work calmly but diligently with your child, cataloging their lists of wants and needs in a college. Once that list is developed, Eagle consultants will identify those colleges that meet the criteria.
When your child visits colleges from the list, Eagle consultants prepare them with a list of pertinent questions to ask, and importantly, to whom they should be addressed. Eagle consultants will also recommend whether an interview will enhance an applicant's chances for admission.
The essay/personal statement often causes the most anxiety among students preparing their college admissions packets. Writing about yourself and your interests is difficult enough; doing it in 500 words or less is sometimes downright daunting.
Please note that the essay/personal statement is a very important part of the application. A great essay can put a borderline candidate into the accepted pool; whereas a statement that lacks clarity and passion may make that same candidate receive a "thin envelope."
With 20 years experience, Eagle consultants have the expertise to help students develop essays that are organized, engaging and lively. While Eagle consultants cannot write the statements (admissions officers can identify professional writers from teenagers) , they help guide students' statements so they become an asset to the overall application.
While standardized test scores play a less significant role in admissions decisions than a decade ago, the results from the test are still important. Be it the SAT or the ACT, nearly all colleges and universities review the results as part of the overall quality of the applicant's admissions packet. They are a way for admissions officers to further assess an applicant's academic ability while comparing students from different or even the same high schools.
Eagle consultants have been preparing students for students for the SAT for the past five years. Having direct experience from several test preparation companies, they have culled the best ideas from each organization to offer the best test-taking strategies and tips. (See link for testimonial).
By looking at a student's transcript, Eagle consultants recommend whether taking the ACT or SAT is the best test option, and will recommend whether it makes sense to take the test multiple times.
Since more and more colleges have an SAT optional program in place, Eagle consultants will further recommend whether it is prudent to take the test at all.
With the cost of some four-year colleges approaching $200,000, a college education in many cases is the second largest investment a family will make - next to the purchase of their home. Having worked with families from different socio-economic backgrounds, Eagle consultants have guided families on how to complete financial aid forms, when to complete them, and where to identify scholarships and grant programs.
With a vast knowledge of colleges, Eagle consultants know which universities are more generous with financial aid packages and how to secure more grants and scholarships and less loans - the latter which needs to be paid back.
Importantly, Eagle consultants will help steer you clear of scholarship scams - they do exist.
